What’s New In Version 6?

We’re pleased to announce new features included with Version 6 of the Quikscribe Recorder and Quikscribe Player.

Let’s go through the major enhancements:

1. License Management:  the new license registration method allows you to easily transfer a license from one PC to another.  A single license key for QS Recorder and QS Player is used for all installed copies, without the need to contact us for individual license keys.

2. File Management: QSR and QSP now have an integrated managment agent that updates file properties to track progress of work-in-progress.  The amazing aspect of this feature is that it’s accomplished REAL TIME and without using an external database engine.  Now you can easily check on files to see if they’ve been completed (or how much of the file is completed), where it was sent, and who worked on the file and for how long.  Using this foundation, future enhancements will include a central control console for enterprise management and reporting.  This method works for files sent using both Network and FTP methods.

3. File Properties:  This is one of the most exciting additions to Version 6!  From Windows Explorer, select an IAF file and right-click to bring up the menu, then select Properties:

With any other type of audio file, all you’ll see under Properties is the “General” tab, which gives you very basic information such as when the file was created.  With the IAF, you’ll get two additional tabs - “Author” and “Typist”.  Click on the Author tab, and this is what you’ll see:

The Author panel provides all the pertinent information about the IAF surrounding the Author’s perspective of creating and sending the dictation file to transcription.  Clicking on the Typist tab provides details on the transcription perspective:

The data is imbedded directly in the IAF, and readily accessible when needed.  There’s no requirement for an external database that can be out-of-synch or offline.

4. File Properties - double-click to open:  From within Windows Explorer (or My Computer) you can browse to a folder and open an IAF file directly by double-clicking the file.  The file will open with the default program assigned (QSR or QSP).  You may also right-click on the file, then select the desired option:

5.  File Properties - Add Attachment (QSR):  You’ll also notice the new options to instantly create a new IAF file and add a file as an attachment.  Just right-click on ANY file in Windows Explorer, then select “Add As Marker Attachment to IAF”.  QS Recorder will initiate and create a new file, and automatically include the selected file attachment.

6.  Installation Options (QSR)- during installation of QS Recorder, you may select the desired options to include during installation, including Voice Recognition integration with Dragon NaturallySpeaking, Detailed (table) View for file open and selection, Philips DPM integration and drivers, and integrated management features.

7. Philips DPM 9600 Integration (QSR):  Version 6 includes integrated support for the new DPM 9600 portable digital recorder (as well as previous DPM models, Philips SpeechMike, Olympus DS-4000, Voice Input Station, and USB foot pedal as recording/playback control devices).

DPM 9600 integration also includes support for the following additional features:
- Centralized management of DPM user profiles through QS Manager
- Ability to link DPM user profile settings to QS Recorder user profile
- Up to four keyword entry selections on the DPM to identify file characteristics such as Subject, Matter Number, Document Type, etc.
- Enable Pro Mode for High Quality recording and File Encryption on device
- Enable PIN password protection for device; provides security for power on
8. Windows Vista Compatibility:  Version 6 provides compatibility with the new Microsoft Windows Vista operating system.

9. Added Doc Name and Doc Type fields to Detailed Views

10. FTP Target Directories Are Set Intuitively
Now you can easily browse to define the exact folder on the FTP file server.

With QS Player you can now download files directly from your FTP folders.

11. Send File Enhancements (QSR)

QS Recorder provides more flexibility for sending files using the Email Method by providing additional email configuration settings.  QSR will link to the defined email program used, or link to SMTP settings if necessary (with user authentication).

‘Send File as .wav’ provides the option to send the recorded audio file in universal .wav format instead of Intelligent Audio File.  The advantage with this feature is to be able to send an audio file (or audio email message) to an outside recipient who does not have the Quikscribe software installed.

12.  Record Mode (QSR)
Append Mode ensures that recording content is not lost.  If you rewind and review the existing recording, then select ‘Record’, the position pointer will move to the end of the existing file and commence recording at that point.  If the same thing were done in ‘Overwrite’ mode (as with a tape system), then existing content would be overwritten.  You may also define the default recording mode to be used every time a new file is created.

13. Deleted Files Are Placed in Windows Recycle bin
When deleting files in Quikscribe Recorder, a copy of the deleted file is placed in the Windows Recycle Bin, allowing later recovery if necessary.

14. New Hot Keys Functions (QSR)
Quikscribe Recorder functions are usually managed with a hand control device such as the Philips SpeechMike.  QS Recorder now has the ability to be controlled using keyboard “hot-key” strokes, which are defined in the Settings panel.  This provides greater flexibility to use other devices such as the ShuttlePro.  The hotkeys can be defined for ‘global’ actions (engaged for QSR no matter what Windows application is active) or ‘local’ (engaged only if QSR is the active application).

15. New Hot Keys Functions (QSP)
Quikscribe Recorder functions are usually managed with a foot pedal controller.  QS Player now has the ability to be controlled using keyboard “hot-key” strokes, which are defined in the Settings panel.  This provides fewer keystrokes (without using a mouse) for actions such as ‘complete file’ and ‘load next file’.  The hotkeys can be defined for ‘global’ actions (engaged for QSP no matter what Windows application is active) or ‘local’ (engaged only if QSP is the active application).

16. Select screen region for capture from hand control button (QSR)
This is another assignable hand controller button function that allows you to quikly specify a region of the screen and capture the image as a marker in the IAF.  This is a convenient tool to use for including visual examples with an audio explanation.

When the ‘Define Region on the Fly’ option is selected, you will be prompted to select the desired screen region each time.  Otherwise you may assign static region coordinates to capture the same region every time.

17. File and Marker popup menus are assignable button functions (QSR)
The ‘File’ menu or ‘Marker’ menu will appear when the desired hand control function button is pressed.

18. Integration with Voice Recognition
The Quikscribe Voice Recognition feature provides a unique ability to integrate a voice recognition software package such as Dragon Naturally Speaking. 
This unique feature will automatically produce a draft text document BEFORE the transcriptionist receives the audio file.  The Voice Recognition option may be selected when the file is created, when it is sent, or as a default setting for all dictation files.

QS Player also has integration features for voice recognition that allow automated processing on demand.
